What is a tarot and astrology reading?

Most people are unaware that astrology and tarot often go hand in hand. I like to use a mix of both for more spiritual guidance, understanding, and overall insight.

Tarot is a way to gain insights on a situation or question that’s been lingering within your soul. People are skeptic about it, which they have every right to be, but it’s all about perspective.

Tarot reading is a huge part of my life, and I do believe they serve as both guidance (positive) and as warnings (negative) more than a prediction. Not sure if that makes sense, so let me break it down.

Astrology provides even further energetic insights when giving a spiritual reading, so if you're familiar with astrological references then you can utilize it to give a more in-depth session.

In my findings, when you work with different tarot cards you will gravitate towards whichever system you’re comfortable using, so word of advice: never go against your intuition. It’s also good to keep note that everyone has their own way of interpreting both astrology and tarot reading. Our intuition guides us in different directions.

Tarot cards, readings, clairvoyance, astrology… and Christianity

For followers of Jesus the supernatural is very real. Although perhaps you have only ever been exposed to something resembling dead religion the reality is that the Christian life isn’t simply rituals and regulations but a life lived in the power of the Holy Spirit. Or a previous generation might refer to the 3rd person of the Godhead, the Trinity, as the Holy Ghost!

Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Galatians 5:25

What’s increasingly obvious is that although many are understandably turning their backs on a dead religion often portrayed as Christianity, at the same time they are embracing other supernatural experiences such as clairvoyance, readings, tarot cards, astrology etc.

As a local church leader I’ve witnessed first-hand how dabbling in this type of supernatural experience has actually damaged people and lead them astray from God and into a spirit realm that is counterfeit. Often much of this unhealthy interest is focused on contacting dead loved ones etc.

Here’s the story of a member of Living Hope Community Church. Let’s call her “Maggie”.

For mediums and psychics there are many ways in which the ‘dead’ communicate with us; transfiguration, clairaudience, tarot cards, etc. For me I grew up learning to be a clairvoyant which is someone who meets with and gains information from the ‘dead’. I went when I could to a spiritualist ‘church’ in the UK to see a relative (who was also my teacher) bring messages to people from deceased loved ones. As you can imagine this had a profound effect on me, the power to speak to the dead was something that I opened myself up to and now regret.

I spent my teenage years being tormented by nightmares where I would scream myself awake. I would be in my house alone and hear my name called out in voices I didn’t recognise. I had many experiences even of having my name screamed into my face whilst I was sleeping and not being able to sleep for the rest of that night. I couldn’t even look into a mirror for fear of what I would see looking back at me sometimes.

When I asked Jesus to enter my life I found a peace and a respite from all of that. I find when I ask for something in prayer I get an answer (albeit no sometimes!) and God is always there to be with me, encourage me and love me unconditionally.

I would urge people to turn their eyes to Jesus and not to anything else.

God has always warned people to stay away from this supernatural dimension as it is used by dark spiritual powers to deceive people from genuinely encountering the God who loves them and was in Christ Jesus reconciling the world to him through his death on the cross.

Sometimes you’ll hear people say it’s only harmless fun or “white” magic.

However the truth is…

“But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” 2 Cor. 11:14

God’s warns us throughout the Scriptures…

“Don’t practice divination, sorcery, fortune-telling, witchery, casting spells, holding séances, or channelling with the dead. People who do these things are an abomination to God.” Deuteronomy 18:10.11

The Apostle Paul wrote to young church leaders like Timothy warning them that the supernatural presence of God will be counterfeited.

“The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.” 1 Timothy 4:1

It was common place in the early church that many embracing Jesus came from these “occult” backgrounds. Upon receiving Jesus as their Saviour there was an immediate departure from these practices as they recognised them as incompatible with following Jesus. They went to great lengths to make a clean break from these deceiving spirits and practices.

“A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly.” Acts 19:19

If you have dabbled with these practices before coming to faith in Jesus the great news is that the One now living in you is greater than the one of the world. It would however be wise to clear out your home and life of anything remaining from these practices, renounce any unconfessed sin relating to these things and with the leaders of your local church pray that any remaining ties to the past or influences are broken once and for all.

How Tarot and Astrology Helped Me Cope With My Depression

Content warning: This story mentions suicide. In this op-ed, Ellen Ricks explains how tarot and astrology helped her cope with depression and suicidal ideation.

I got my first tarot deck in college from a used book sale for just one dollar. I bought it on a whim because I liked the design — both beautiful and vaguely grim — and I’ve always been curious about the practice of divination and the metaphysical. I didn’t open my pack until six months later, after I had attempted suicide. I needed to keep my hands busy and there’s only so many games of solitaire you can play by yourself.

After weeks of mindless shuffling and an increased feeling of desperation and hopelessness, I asked the cards a question that had been heavy on my mind: “Will things get better?” I whispered in my dark bedroom. My fingers stopped their shuffling and pulled out a single card. The Star: hope, rebuilding, healing.

With that, I started to crawl my way out of the darkness.

Tarot, astrology, crystals, and all things spiritual have gotten popular in recent years, and that spirituality has now spread into wellness spaces. Nicole Micucci, MSW, primary clinician at Pathway to Hope, a Delphi Behavioral Health Group facility, says that she has had several clients mention their zodiac signs and different spiritual concepts. “As a therapist, I utilize the client’s personal belief systems to build rapport and give them the skills necessary to unpack their negative thoughts and beliefs.”

Narayana Montúfar, senior astrologer at Astrology.com, has been giving birth chart readings to clients for years. With more people interested in astrology and tarot, she says there are many reasons why people are turning to the divine. “There is a spiritual awakening happening at a collective level. So many people are beginning to believe that there is a force in place and that even if we don’t see it, we can feel the immense influence it has in our lives.”

I began studying tarot to learn how to bring more positivity and focus into my life. I asked the deck my deep questions, but it wasn’t simply going to hand me an answer. That's the thing — even when you draw a card that has negative connotations (like, say, the death card), it's not telling you literally what's coming. Even these so-called negative cards can be interpreted to give hope (the death card could mean a new beginning). Instead, the cards helped me frame my thoughts as I parsed through my emotions and my future.

When my relationship was ending, I did tarot spreads on how to heal my heart. I journaled my cards’ meaning when my depression made it impossible to get out of bed. I still experienced suicidal ideation, but tarot gave me hope by showing that the future is constantly changing — and it may be for the better. I took from the cards that there are a million ways life can play out. During times where I only saw darkness, tarot showed me I had the power to change my fate.

Soon after learning tarot, I dove headfirst into astrology. It entailed much more than reading my daily horoscope online. "Ninety percent of people know their sun sign, but that is only the beginning of their story,” Montúfar says. “By continuing to study the placement of all their planets, by sign and house, people can start connecting to other parts of themselves.”

My sun sign — which is the one you tell people when they ask you what your sign is — is in Virgo, a meticulous and organized sign, but my moon sign — which is the ruler of emotions — and my rising sign — which describes how other people see me — is in passionate, competitive, enthusiastic Aries. This explained a lot of my personality that Virgo didn’t, like my short temper and argumentative nature. You can’t pinpoint a mental illness on a birth chart, but different aspects of my chart helped me better frame my personality and my struggles. It gave me insight on my own self.

Micucci warns that astrology could drive negative thought patterns if a person takes it too literally and gets a negative reading or an answer they don't like. She also says that latching on to specific characteristics of astrological signs can hinder personal growth and “create limiting beliefs.” Still, I looked at my birth chart as a personal cheat sheet. Sure, my Aries moon and rising made me lose my temper easily, but that taught me to channel my passionate nature in more productive ways that matched my service-oriented Virgo; writing and mental health activism. My birth chart showed so many positive aspects of myself that I couldn’t see before: charming, driven, helpful, intelligent — and that was empowering.

“The biggest gift astrology gives us is awareness, the knowledge and reassurance that each one of us is unique,” says Montúfar. “And because we have been living with our charts our whole lives, gaining awareness requires the effort of observing ourselves, accepting ourselves for who we are, and then making the necessary changes.”

Montúfar also says that studying astrology has given her “a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses, as well as the power that my own chart holds. And most importantly — how to unlock that power!”

While it constantly feels like I’m living on a roller coaster, my birth chart helps me remember that there is light at the end of the tunnel, my life will be successful, I will find balance, Mercury will be out of retrograde soon. Sure, it may seem ridiculous to some that I’m waiting for planets to shift, but when you feel like you're drowning in a sea of your own self-loathing, knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel suddenly becomes a lifeline.

“Studying ourselves from this point of view also brings healing when we realize that a lot of the situations that we go through are not our fault. Being a language of energy, astrology guides us by pointing us in the right direction,” says Montúfar.

Of course, Astrology and tarot are not substitutes for actual mental health treatment like medication or therapy. Still, things like tarot and birth charts can act as self-help tools. Tarot is just another version of journaling and getting deeper into the subconscious. Astrology is a means of self-guidance and reflection.

“Coping skills are not universal and differ from person to person,” says Micucci. “If the client is seeing increased mindfulness, gratitude, and a hopeful perspective utilizing astrology and tarot readings, I say go for it. Hey, if a client wants to discuss their sign and how it has impacted their well-being and perspective of life, I’m all ears.”

For me, they were tools to help me rebuild a form of spirituality to look to in times of need. It did not forever silence my suicidal ideation, instead it became a coping mechanism that eventually guided me to the decision to go to therapy. After a period of struggle, heartbreak, and growing pain, I can see my life transition into positive ways, things I couldn’t have seen without my coping tools. When all seems hopeless, there’s a powerful feeling of looking up to the sky and believing it’s going to get better.
